A 4-day Regional meeting on the implementation of the Tuberculosis Action Plan for the WHO European Region 2023-2030 for TB high priority countries took place during 21-24 November 2022 in Istanbul, Turkey.

Among the objectives of the Regional Meeting conducted in close collaboration with the Global Fund, the Stop TB Partnership, and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) were the following:

  • To launch the implementation of the new TB Action Plan for the WHO European Region 2023-2030 and to support alignment of the national strategic plans for TB with the TB Action Plan;
  • To discuss strategic priorities and policy level actions, and discuss next steps towards United Nations General Assembly High-level Meeting in 2023;
  • To discuss and agree on priority actions on TB and DR-TB for countries, WHO, Stop TB Partnership, the Global Fund, USAID and other partners for the first period of implementation of TB Action Plan for 2023-2025;
  • To equip countries with tools for preparing applications to new cycle of funding allocation by the Global Fund for 2024-2026.

Paul Sommerfeld as a Chair of the WHO RCC-THV group and Yuliia Kalancha as a representative of the WHO TAG-TB group were present at the meeting.

During the opening session on the final day of the meeting, Paul Sommerfeld along with deputy ministers of health, executives, and staff of international organisations, addressed the meeting with a brief welcoming speech. Also, on the same day in a separate presentation, Mr. Sommerfeld briefed participants on the opportunities and challenges for meaningful civil society participation in the WHO European Region.
