Only 1 in 3 MDR TB patients in Europe successfully complete treatment

To mark World TB Day on 24 March 2014, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the World Health Organisation Regional Office for Europe have released their  joint TB surveillance and monitoring report for Europe 2014. While the report does make clear that, overall, the EU/EEA countries have met the target of an average five-year decline it is clear that there is much more that must be done to ensure we turn the tide against a disease which continues to destroy lives and livelihoods across the region. Perhaps the most shocking revelation is that countries have not Больше…

It couldn’t happen to me? Living with MDR-TB in Romania

Today we’re posting a second blog from Tom Maguire’s, part of the Campaigns Team at RESULTS UK, visit to Romania. During his time, Tom met with a young woman called Cristina to discuss her experience of living with multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB). This guest blog from Cristina shows the huge impact MDR-TB can have on a young woman’s life and the level of courage and determination that is needed to complete two years of treatment. You hear about it on TV but you think “Neah! It couldn’t happen to me”. And then it does. And you’re confused, thinking what you’ve Больше…

Tuberculosis in Romania: Tackling TB in Romania's Prisons

Tuberculosis in Romania: Tackling TB in Romania’s Prisons

Tom Maguire from the RESULTS UK campaigns team spent two weeks during December in Romania creating a short video and photo-story on drug-resistant TB. In this blog post he discusses some of the innovative measures that have been introduced in Romania’s prisons to reduce TB rates. Despite having one of the highest rates of TB and multi-drug resistant TB (MDR-TB) in Eastern Europe (30,000 people currently have TB in Romania and 1,500 people die from it every year), Romania’s TB rates in prisons are remarkably low.  Historically, TB rates have been drastically higher in prisons than in the general population Больше…

Health advocates call for EU leadership on Multi-Drug Resistant Tuberculosis

With the release of its latest briefing “Multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB): A European cross-border health threat requiring a regional response”, the TB Europe Coalition calls the European Union (EU) institutions to take an increased role in the fight against MDR-TB in the European Region. While TB rates have been steadily decreasing in Europe, multi-drug resistant TB remains a major public health concern in several countries in the region, including in the European Union. According to the WHO 2013 report, the European Region bears a quarter of the global MDR-TB burden, with 74,000 cases estimated in 2012.Eastern Europe and Central Asia Больше…

Opportunity for training in MDR-TB control: Latvia

The World Health Organisation ‘Collaborating Centre for Research and Training in Management of MDR TB in Latvia is offering a selection of training courses beginning in 2014. The collaborating centre has recognised that educated staff in specialised TB services is crucial if countries are going to reach the targets of the European roadmap or Consolidated Action Plan to Prevent and Combat Multidrug- and Extensively Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis. These targets are to: Decrease by 20% the proportion of MDR-TB among re-treatment cases; Diagnose at least 85% of all estimated MDR-TB cases; Successfully treat at least 75% of MDR-TB patients. TB Europe Coalition gives voice to European TB activists at Union World Conference

As mentioned in our previous blog post, civil society actors are certainly making their voices heard at the 44th Union World Conference on TB in Paris. Nowhere is this truer than at advocacy corner hosted by the ACTION partnership and the Stop TB Partnership. Today, the TB Europe Coalition hosted a lively and engaging session at advocacy corner attended by many. The session, entitled “European Voices in the TB fight”, gave the opportunity to advocates from Eastern Europe and Central Asia to speak about their experiences as former TB patients and advocates. “When I found out I had Multi Drug-Resistant TB Больше…

Tuberculosis: 'We are watching a ticking timebomb'

Tuberculosis: ‘We are watching a ticking timebomb’

Today saw the launch of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Global Tuberculosis Report 2013 whichmade it clear that there is not nearly enough being done to combat a disease that continues to place a terrible burden upon so many in all corners of the world. The report shows that TB deaths have only decreased from 1.4 million in 2011 to 1.3 million in 2012, a decrease of just 2%. Worryingly, these aren’t the most striking figures to emerge from the report. It shows that about three million people each year aren’t being diagnosed and getting the treatment they need. In addition, Больше…

The Race Against Tuberculosis: Four TB films now available in six European languages

The Race Against Tuberculosis: Four TB films now available in six European languages

Earlier this year we posted the first of Aeras’ four short films on the TB epidemic. These films, which are told through the eyes of TB patients, physicians, scientists, advocates and policymakers, thus making for particularly powerful viewing. Every year, approximately nine million men, women and children across the world become sick with TB, and 1.4 million die. This is a problem not just isolated to developing countries. As we frequently mention in our blogposts, TB remains a considerable problem in the region, particularly worrying are the increasing numbers of MDR-TB. Europe hosts some of the worst rates of the strain in the world. An Больше…

The World Health Organisation have recently published a new compendium, ‘Best practices in prevention, control and care for drug-resistant tuberculosis: A resource for the continued implementation of the Consolidated Action Plan to Prevent and Combat Multidrug- and Extensively Drug-Resistant TB in the WHO European Region‘. The compendium recognises the progress that has been made in implementing the ‘Consolidated Action Plan to Prevent and Combat Multidrug- and Extensively-Drug Resistant TB’ in the region but also makes clear that critical challenges still remain. As a result of these challenges, this new compendium has been released to improve the transfer of knowledge and Больше…

MDR-TB casts a shadow over Russia

MDR-TB casts a shadow over Russia

Tuberculosis and, in particular, drug-resistant forms of the disease have long been a burden on many countries in Eastern Europe and the Russian Federation is no exception. A video recently produced by Channel 4 News in the UK highlights the growing problem that the country has with multidrug-resistant TB in the general population but also in children and in prisons. The report also raises the worrying question of what will happen to rates of MDR-TB in the country give that many international donors have now left the country, ultimately as a result of political reasons as opposed to the fact Больше…

TB: Voices in the fight against the European epidemic

The TB Europe Coalition recently released an updated version of our report ‘Tuberculosis: Voices in the fight against the European epidemic‘. Here we tell the story of Iulian. Since we first published Iulian’s story in our report, Iulian developed XDR-TB and passed away in spring of 2012, leaving behind a wife and two children. Iulian spent his life working in agriculture and construction. Until he got sick with TB he had what he called a ‘beautiful life’. Here is his story: Iulian contracted TB in 2007 and soon developed MDR-TB. At first he took his medication regularly, but he was Больше…
